On arrival, Attila menaced Ultern’s Electric types with the Crystal System. Wanting to capture Ulternian Pichu for Giovanni, he was thwarted by many (including Evie the talking Eevee, Kebi the wild Seviper, and former Pokemon Espurr), forced to retreat and abandon the effort, his captives freed… although at one point prior to that, Ash’s Pikachu had attacked and, its high powered electric attacks adding to all of the previous Electric types’ stored energy, returned all the electricity on Pikachu, overwhelming him with an attack meant to take down Raikou, then turned black, preparing to drain his energy. Ash was forced to retreat with his Pikachu, as Attila taunted him that his partner could die. Then, he got his butt kicked by nearly every non-Electric type in Ultern.
Attila remained, for quite some time, frequently recognized (even in disguise) and chased by wild Electric types in Ultern, who understandably bore a grudge against him.
Without further orders from Giovanni or Professor Sebastian, no Team Rocket presence in Ultern outside of a single grunt he met, Attila decided to lie low and adopted the persona of Akira as his civilian identity. Knowing he could not pass for Ulternian with his very different dialect and his imposing figure would draw attention no matter what, he dressed in kimono, straw hat (to hide his hair and eyes), and geta sandals whenever in public for a time…
Although he continued to gather intel (including making friendly conversation and taking Professor Sycamore out to drink to gleam information on him and his research which could interest Professor Sebastian), he did wish for a taste of peaceful civilian life, and so also visited the Gilterrace Town Pokemon Center’s cafe. He was touched by the barista’s kindness. Business strategy or not, being shown kindness is rare for Attila and the free food, lovingly prepared, warmed his heart…
In general, he found the populace of Ultern warm and inviting, generous and unsuspicious. He has no desire to harm anyone here if he could avoid it, although their kindness shamed him deeply. He knew he didn’t belong.
During the forced truth event, reformed former Team Plasma operative Manzana and Attila bonded over their similarly dark and unpleasant occupations and pasts, incongruous with Ultern’s peaceful and brotherly atmosphere… after becoming sworn brothers, Attila decided to follow Manzana’s lead and return the kindness of the inhabitants back to them, living an honest, simple life doing odd jobs, while living with Manzana and Anemone. He tries his best to avoid looking at her (at all, although Manzana only cautioned against looking too long) because Manzana admitted to being jealous and Attila mentioned his weakness for women during the truth event... ^^;;
Attila began to appear in public, without the disguise or Akira persona, identifying himself as Attila or Buson, although he no longer wore the Rocket uniform. He didn’t deny his crimes, although he does not advertise being a (former) Rocket, nor does he want to be recognizable to police.
He made peace with Evie (who saved the Ulternian Pichu from him and who Attila always found unsettling because she spoke like a human being), who accepted this change as genuine, although she still wasn’t fully trusting towards him yet, as she was separated from her loving trainer years ago by Team Rocket prior to arriving in Ultern.
Bashou (Hun) made his arrival in Ultern shortly thereafter. Buson (Attila) was initially glad to see him in the Pokemon Center, but dubious. Bashou was also glad (in his own subtle way) to see him, but both were suspicious of the other and uncertain of their identities. Both spoke briefly, then took to the Pokemon Center lodgings for a more private place to speak.
Bashou did not cope well with communal lodging, his mental health suffering for it, although he tried to hide it. Buson noticed and regretted being unable to afford an apartment or home in the city.
Buson learned from Manzana that there are other islands he can travel to in the region, including Chura Island, which was mostly untouched nature, largely a preserve.
Buson left working on farms (Gold now works at the dairy farm Buson used to work at) and rice terraces, to move to Chura Island, taking residence in a ryokan (traditional inn) called Gukuru House. Bashou found the place reminiscent of his home in rural Johto and visibly improved at having more peace and privacy.
Buson began work as a sailor on a cargo ship, having had much prior experience with airplane cargoalbeit often of the illegal sort, transporting poached Pokemon or Team Rocket's human victims... and working as a pilot... Buson took to his new job well and enjoys travelling to different islands, meeting with old friends and making new ones.
Buson gained Evie's trust enough to be allowed to pet and carry her. She now seems to fully trust Buson, even sleeping while carried by him.
Buson learned of the Midnight Bloom from others sailors' stories. Evie showed interest in the story and wished to accompany him on the adventure. Together with Bashou and Evie, Buson sought out Chichi Island, leaving on the night of a new moon, as the tide is only low enough to reveal the mouth of the cave entrance at night.
They had encounters with several wild Pokemon, but most importantly, Morelull who wished to take of their energy. Bashou and Buson were too suspicious and quick to be violent, but Evie offered up her energy, believing they would only take a little that would be easily restored with rest. The Morelull promise the path will be easier for them. They later accidentally upset a young Murkrow and are pursued by a giant, angry flock, but the Morelull arrive to put the flock to sleep.
Eventually, they found the Midnight Bloom and Buson revealed he sought it because he heard they give good dreams when drank as a tea before bed and he hoped they would help Bashou.
They take several cut flowers and three rooted flowers each in the hopes of trying to grow the Midnight Bloom on Ohritori and Chura respectively.
With Ken taking Mayday's joke threats to the radio station seriously and knowing Ken had been taken hostage by Rockets before and thus feared them, Buson went off to talk with Mayday to convince her to leave Ken and the radio station alone. ... Buson tended to treat negotiations more like shake-downs and was unnecessarily aggressive, but Mayday listened to his concerns oddly calmly and made clear it was only a joke. Buson felt embarrassed for the way he behaved and promised to bring a gift next time to make up for it. When asked what she'd like, she wanted a portable Berry Mixer.
Buson bought the portable Berry Mixer the same day on his way back home.
Buson briefly returned home to his world. It was brief in respect to Ultern's inhabitants, but much more time passed for Buson, who saw the end of the unsuccessful Raikou mission, completed many more missions, then travelled to Hoenn to successfully complete the Rayquaza mission.
Returning to a life of crime and cruelty after his peaceful time in Ultern and bonding more with Pokemon caused an even greater disonnance for Buson and is gnawing at his conscience.
During his time in Hoenn, he also caught three new Pokemon, a Mawile he trained as a battling Pokemon for his own use, and two Roselia he trained for Bashou's sake, one left with the Bashou in his world and one for the one in Ultern, even if he had little hope he might return. He almost doubted Ultern's existence, except he still had the bottle of souvenir stardust sand with him as proof.
Buson gave the Roselia to Bashou during their reunion after his return to Ultern. Buson learned Bashou couldn't make up his mind on preferring this world or his home world, unlike Buson, who strongly preferred Ultern. But both are still united in feeling like outcasts, due to how they're conditioned to still behave like members of Team Rocket in times of conflict (see the rather disastrous way he took to "talking" with Mayday above.) Bashou helped him understand he fact that Ultern is so peaceful compared to their lives as Rockets in their own worlds, is precisely why being here felt like a welcome vacation or a sort of pristine, untouched paradise. They might be too cruel and accustomed to life as criminals to ever truly fit in here, but this place was a haven to them in a way it couldn't be if they still had normal homes to miss and want to return to.
